What are farmers' perceptions about farmland landbirds? A Galapagos Islands perspective

Conservation practices in agricultural landscapes can greatly mitigate biodiversity loss. However, agricultural landscapes are embedded in complex, social-ecological systems and therefore require a strong social-ecological approach for effective conservation measures. The Galapagos Islands are globally recognized for their high levels of biodiversity. Nevertheless, in recent years, Galapagos landbirds have suffered rapid declines, specifically in the agricultural zone. Our study is the first to examine the farmers’ perception of landbirds in the agricultural zone of Santa Cruz, Galapagos Islands. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 38 farmers to characterize the relationship between farmers and landbirds including how landbirds affect farmers and farmers’ perceptions of landbirds. The interviewed farmers managed a diverse array of farm types including coffee in agroforestry settings (23.7%), small-scale fruit and vegetable (60.5%) and livestock production (15.8%). We found that 86.9% of farmers had a positive or neutral perception of birds despite 52.6% of farmers finding finches bothersome. The most common techniques farmers employed to deter birds were putting out food and water, using nets to protect seedbeds and crops and using protective tubes around young plants. Our results suggest a positive potential for future conservation work targeted on farmland biodiversity. Future conservation projects should also address disservices and the mitigation of crop raiding by landbirds, the uninformed use of pesticides and other pest issues such as ants and rats.
Status of the Northern Silvery Grebe Podiceps juninensis in the northern Andes: recent changes in distribution, population trends and conservation needs

The Northern Silvery Grebe Podiceps juninensis is an aquatic bird species considered Vulnerable to extinction in Ecuador and Endangered in Colombia. Globally the species is considered Near Threatened. Herein we report recent changes in distribution and population trends for the subpopulation in the northern Andes (Ecuador, Colombia), which is small and isolated. The Northern Silvery Grebe has undergone two documented extirpations, and at least one colonisation event, over the last three decades. More than 90% of the subpopulation relies on two wetlands, La Mica and Colta lakes in Ecuador, with the latter facing an accelerated sedimentation process which jeopardizes the fate of the wetland, and the species, in the mid-term. The population of La Mica lost 80% of its birds in 2000 after the damming of the lake, but then remained stable over our census period (2004–2013). In contrast, the Colta population results from a recent colonisation in the early 2000s, and has experienced an exponential growth since then (annual population multiplication rate: 1.464). The growth of this population is so fast that it must include an important contribution of immigrants. The temporal coincidence between the drop in population size at lake La Mica and the colonisation of lake Colta suggests that the Colta population was founded by immigrants from La Mica. Finally, the absence of current reports of the species at wetlands in Colombia suggests that the species remains at very low numbers, bolstering the shrinkage in northern distribution.

A new carabid species, Pterostichus (Melanius) castor, is described and characterized. The species appears to be restricted to beaver houses in eastern North America. The new species is closely related to P. ebeninus Dejean but can be distinguished from that species mainly by the form of the pronotum. Lindroth's key to Pterostichus of Canada is modified to include the new species.

Objectives
To document the prevalence and the socio-spatial variations of obesity and to identify individual and household characteristics, lifestyles and dietary practices contributing to obesity and its socio-spatial distribution.
DesignPopulation-based cross-sectional survey. We selected 1570 households from four strata characterised as unstructured and low building-density (ULBD), unstructured and high building-density (UHBD), structured and low building-density (SLBD) and structured and high building-density (SHBD) areas. Structured areas are those that were allotted by the township authority (cadastral services), with public services; unstructured areas refer to those developed with no cadastral organisation.
SettingOuagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso.
SubjectsBMI was calculated in 2022 adults aged 35 years and above who were classified as obese when their BMI was ≥30 kg/m2. Obesity was investigated in relation to household and individual characteristics, lifestyles and dietary practices; adjusted odds ratios with 95 % confidence intervals were derived from a logistic regression model.
ResultsThe overall prevalence of obesity was 14·7 % (males 5·5 % and females 21·9 %). Age, gender, household equipment index, usual transport with motor vehicles and micronutrient-rich food consumption were associated with obesity. After adjustment for these factors, obesity remained associated with the area of residence: residents from SHBD areas were more likely to be obese than those from ULBD areas (OR = 1·41; 95 % CI 2·59,4·76).
ConclusionsObesity in Ouagadougou is a preoccupant problem that calls for more consideration. Thorough investigation is needed to assess the environmental factors that contribute to the socio-spatial disparity of obesity.
Transgene escape in sugar beet production fields: data from six years farm scale monitoring

Concerns have been raised in Europe about the efficiency, sustainability, and environmental impact of the first genetically modified crops. The committees and regulators in charge of approving procedures have encouraged a field trial approach for safety assessment studies under current agronomic conditions. We describe the gene flow from sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) in a multi-year and multi-crop monitoring study on farmers' fields at two locations that has been carried out since 1995. We analyzed two sugar beet lines that have been genetically transformed for herbicide resistance. One sugar beet has resistance to glufosinate and the other to glyphosate. Large differences among lines, years and locations were observed. These differences provided a broad range of situations to estimate the risks. Sugar beet bolters produced the majority (86%) of the herbicide-resistant seeds harvested in the field. Direct pollen flow from sugar beet bolters to weed beets that were growing within the same field as well as in a neighboring field that was left fallow accounted for only 0.4% of the resistant seeds released over the years and locations. Descendants of the hybrids between the sugar beet and the weed beet produced the remaining 13.6% of resistant seeds. Herbicide-resistant seeds from the progeny of the weed beet were recorded up to 112 m away from the closest transgenic pollen donor. Indications were observed of non-randomness of the weed beet producing resistant progeny. We also analyzed pollen flow to male-sterile bait plants located within and outside of the sugar beet field. Herbicide-resistant pollen flow was recorded up to 277 m, and fitted with an inverse power regression. Using sugar beet varieties with no, or very low, sensitivity to bolting and destroying bolters are two necessary measures that could delay gene flow.

Introduction. Cropping systems of the mango trees in West Africa are very varied. Each one of them developed in a specific context where the agronomical practices and the varietal composition of the orchards contribute to the diversity observed. The study undertaken should make it possible to better understand the influence of the potential outlets on the evolution of the regional mango production. Principal cropping systems. In the studied area, the main part of the mango orchards has less than 10 ha; their production is extensive and uses few inputs. They belong in majority to growers whose principal activity is centred on agriculture. Certain plantations close to 100 ha, found in Senegal or in Côte.d'ivoire, belong to exporters and profit from a technical assistance. Agronomical practices. The study of the agronomical practices used in mango orchards of West Africa made it possible to analyze the aspects of seedling production, choice of the site, installation of the orchard before plantation, plantation and maintenance of the trees, fire protection, water management, as well as the effect of the export market on the varietal choice and the varietal offer during a harvest campaign. Diseases and enemies. An inventory of the pathological problems and physiological diseases likely to devalue the production were carried out. Marketing. This part made it possible to distinguish intercontinental exports, requiring a specific harvest and conditioning organization, and the local, national and regional markets. Processing. Today, the share of transformed mangos into West Africa uses only one negligible proportion of the total production. Conclusion and prospects. Beside a traditional production which presents signs of brittleness appear modern orchards. More than a necessary intensification of the orchards, a rationalization of the agronomical practices, plant health protection, fruit harvest or handling are impossible to circumvent. Downstream, the export path is confronted with a fast evolution of the exogenous regulations, based on qualitative and sanitary standards increasingly strict.

The occurrence of styrene in food may be an important aroma defect (celluloid odour), even at very low concentrations (Miltz et al. 1980) causing consumer rejection and is therefore a problem for the food industry. We examined the biosynthetic pathway leading to styrene formation by Penicillium camemberti using labelled compounds. As styrene is strongly hydrophobic and volatile, we first had to develop a continuous extraction process. Using resins XAD2 it was reasonable to suspect phenylalanine (Phe) as the precursor. The addition of Phe marked with 13C on the ring provokes the accumulation of labelled styrene. The enzyme activities involved were also tentatively measured. Styrene appears to be synthesized from phenylalanine by phenylalanine ammonia-lyase activity followed by a decarboxylation catalysed by a cinnamic acid decarboxylase.

Introduction. The mango tree is one of the most widespread fruit trees in West Africa. A history of its introduction into that area was recently published. To follow upon this document, the presented analysis was devoted to the principal varieties that are cultivated there today and to the impact of the historical and commercial factors on the varietal composition of the orchards. Some definitions. In precondition to an inventory of the varieties, certain terms making it possible to characterise them were specified (precocity, monoembryony and polyembryony) and some information on the origin of the Floridian varieties was provided. Principal varieties cultivated in West Africa. Four mango variety categories were distinguished: varieties of local or polyembryonic mangos (mangots and Number One), first monoembryonic varieties propagated by grafting (Amélie, Julie, Sabot, Djibelor and Cuisse Madame), and the Floridian varieties, also monoembryonic and propagated by grafting, introduced later and used either for export (Kent, Keitt, Palmer, Zill, Valencia, Smith, Irwin and Haden), or for the regional markets (Brooks, Davis-Haden, Miami Late, Springfels, Beverly, Eldon and Ruby). Each variety was described, like its farming characteristics and its outlets. The composition of the grafted mango tree orchards. This composition is influenced by the historical evolution and the purpose of the fruits that can be eaten, sold on the local, national or subregional market, exported toward the international market or processed in artisanal or industrial units. This orchard composition was specified for Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal and Togo.

Introduction. The mango tree today, very appreciated in West Africa for its fruit and its shade, is, however, of recent introduction in Africa. The article presents the history of its expansion in the zone. Mango tree expansion in West Africa. Originating from India, the mango tree was reported for the first time in West Africa, in Senegal, in 1824. It was at the end of the xixth century that the mango trees began to have a significant distribution, especially in the coastal zones. Their extension became significant during the first half of the xxth century. An Amélie mango tree introduced in Mali around the 1890s allowed the grafting of many trees, which were widely distributed in the bordering countries. At the end of the 1940s, collections were gradually established in the entire zone and, during the decade 1970–1980, every country in French-speaking West Africa had at least a collection of mango trees. Export trends. Mali was the first country to export mangos towards Europe, around the end of the 1960s. It was followed by Burkina Faso, Guinea, Senegal, and especially the Côte d’Ivoire, whose exports, of approximately 2 500 t at the beginning of the 1990s, were multiplied by 4.5 in 2000. This fast growth of exports from the Côte d’Ivoire profited from the presence of a maritime front and of a mass effect created by pineapple and banana exports. Amélie for a long time constituted the main part of the exports of Mali, Burkina Faso and the Côte d’Ivoire. However, since 1971, experimental shipments of colored mangos have been successfully realized. With mango consumption becoming democratized in Europe, the choice of exported varieties was gradually tightened: Amélie, at the beginning of the harvest season, then Kent, Keitt and Palmer. Parallel to this varietal evolution, the packaging techniques were gradually modernized.
Chlorine Diffusion in Uranium Dioxide : Thermal Effects versus Radiation Enhanced Effects

Chlorine is present as an impurity in the UO2 nuclear fuel. 35Cl is activated into 36Cl by thermal neutron capture. In case of interim storage or deep geological disposal of the spent fuel, this isotope is known to be able to contribute significantly to the instant release fraction because of its mobile behavior and its long half life (around 300000 years). It is therefore important to understand its migration behavior within the fuel rod. During reactor operation, chlorine diffusion can be due to thermally activated processes or can be favoured by irradiation defects induced by fission fragments or alpha decay. In order to decouple both phenomena, we performed two distinct experiments to study the effects of thermal annealing on the behaviour of chlorine on one hand and the effects of the irradiation with fission products on the other hand. During in reactor processes, part of the 36Cl may be displaced from its original position, due to recoil or to collisions with fission products. In order to study the behavior of the displaced chlorine, 37Cl has been implanted into sintered depleted UO2 pellets (mean grain size around 18 μm). The spatial distribution of the implanted and pristine chlorine has been analyzed by SIMS before and after treatment. Thermal annealing of 37Cl implanted UO2 pellets (implantation fluence of 1013 ions.cm−2) show that it is mobile from temperatures as low as 1273 K (Ea=4.3 eV). The irradiation with fission products (Iodine, E=63.5 MeV) performed at 300 and 510 K, shows that the diffusion of chlorine is enhanced and that a thermally activated contribution is preserved (Ea=0.1 eV). The diffusion coefficients measured at 1473 K and under fission product irradiation at 510 K are similar (D = 3.10-14 cm2.s−1). Considering in first approximation that the diffusion length L can be expressed as a function of the diffusion coefficient D and time t by : L=(Dt)1/2, the diffusion distance after 3 years is L=17 μm. It results that there is a great probability for the chlorine contained in the UO2 grains to have reached the grain boundaries after 3 years, in the core of the fuel rod as well as at its periphery. Moreover, diffusion and concentration of chlorine at grain boundaries has been evidenced using SIMS mapping. Our results indicate therefore, that, during reactor operation and after, the majority of 36Cl is likely to have moved to grain boundaries, rim and gap. This fraction might then significantly contribute to the rapid or instant release of chlorine. This could have important consequences for safety assessment.

Chacun d’eux s’est développé dans un contexte spécifique où l’itinéraire technique et la composition variétale des plantations contribuent à la diversité observée. L’étude entreprise devrait permettre de mieux comprendre l’influence des débouchés potentiels sur l’évolution de cette filière horticole. Les principaux systèmes de plantation. Dans la région étudiée, l’essentiel des vergers de manguiers exploités a moins de 10 ha ; leur production est extensive et utilise peu d’intrants. Ils appartiennent en majorité à des planteurs dont l’activité principale est centrée sur l’agriculture. Certaines plantations proches de 100 ha, trouvées au Sénégal ou en Côte d’Ivoire, appartiennent à des exportateurs et bénéficient d’un encadrement technique. Les itinéraires techniques. L’étude des itinéraires techniques utilisés en vergers de manguiers en Afrique de l’Ouest a permis d’analyser les aspects de production de plants, choix du site, aménagement du verger avant plantation, plantation et entretien des arbres, protection contre les incendies, alimentation hydrique, ainsi que l’effet du marché d’exportation sur le choix variétal et l’offre variétale au cours d’une campagne de récolte. Maladies et ennemis. Un inventaire des problèmes pathologiques et des maladies physiologiques susceptibles de dévaloriser la production a été effectué. Commercialisation. Cette partie a permis de distinguer les exportations intercontinentales, nécessitant une organisation spécifique de la récolte et du conditionnement, et les marchés locaux, nationaux et régionaux. La transformation. Aujourd’hui, la part des mangues transformées en Afrique de l’Ouest n’utilise qu’une proportion infime de la production totale. Conclusion et perspectives. À côté d’une production traditionnelle qui présente des signes de fragilité apparaissent des vergers modernes. Plus qu’une intensification des vergers, par ailleurs nécessaire, une rationalisation des pratiques agronomiques, de la protection phytosanitaire, de la récolte ou de la manipulation des fruits est incontournable. En aval, la filière d’exportation se trouve confrontée à une évolution rapide des réglementations exogènes, basées sur des normes qualitatives et sanitaires de plus en plus strictes.

Introduction. Le manguier est l’un des arbres fruitiers les plus répandus en Afrique de l’Ouest. Un historique de son introduction dans la zone a été publié récemment. Pour faire suite à ce document, l’analyse présentée a été consacrée aux principales variétés qui y sont cultivées aujourd’hui et à l’impact des facteurs historiques et commerciaux sur la composition variétale des vergers. Quelques définitions. En préalable à un inventaire des variétés, certains termes permettant de les caractériser ont été précisés (précocité, monoembryonie et polyembryonie) et quelques informations sur l’origine des variétés floridiennes ont été fournies. Les principales variétés cultivées en Afrique de l’Ouest. Quatre catégories ont été distinguées : les variétés de mangues locales ou polyembryonnées (mangots, mangue du Cameroun), les premières variétés monoembryonnées propagées par greffage (Amélie, Julie, Sabot, Djibelor, Cuisse Madame), les variétés floridiennes, également monoembryonnées et propagées par greffage, introduites plus tardivement et utilisées soit pour l’exportation (Kent, Keitt, Palmer, Zill, Valencia, Smith, Irwin, Haden), soit pour les marchés régionaux (Brooks, Davis-Haden, Miami Late, Springfels, Beverly, Eldon, Ruby). Chaque variété a été décrite, de même ses caractéristiques culturales et ses débouchés. La composition des vergers de manguiers greffés. La composition des vergers greffés est influencée par l’évolution historique et la destination des fruits qui peuvent être autoconsommés, vendus sur le marché local, national ou sous-régional, exportés sur le marché international ou transformés dans des unités artisanales ou industrielles. Cette composition a été précisée pour la Guinée, le Mali, le Burkina-Faso, la Côte d’Ivoire, le Sénégal et le Togo.

Introduction. Le manguier aujourd’hui très apprécié en Afrique de l’Ouest pour ses fruits et son ombrage est pourtant d’introduction récente en Afrique. L’article retrace l’historique de son expansion dans la zone. L'expansion du manguier en Afrique de l’Ouest. Originaire d’Inde, le manguier a été signalé pour la première fois en Afrique de l’Ouest, au Sénégal, en 1824. C’est à la fin du xixe siècle que les manguiers ont commencé à connaître une diffusion significative, surtout dans les zones côtières. Leur extension deviendra importante pendant la première moitié du xxe siècle. Un manguier Amélie introduit au Mali vers 1890 fut à l’origine de nombreux plants greffés qui furent largement diffusés dans les pays limitrophes. Dès la fin des années 1940, des collections furent établies progressivement dans toute la zone et, au cours de la décennie 1970–1980, chaque pays d’Afrique de l’Ouest francophone possédait au moins une collection de manguiers. l'évolution des exportations. Le Mali fut le premier pays à exporter, vers la fin des années 1960, des mangues vers l’Europe. Il fut suivi par le Burkina, la Guinée, le Sénégal, et surtout la Côte d’Ivoire, dont les exportations, d’environ 2 500 t au début des années 1990, ont été multipliées par 4,5 en 2000. Cette croissance rapide des exportations ivoiriennes a bénéficié de la présence d’une façade maritime et d’un effet de masse créé par les exportations de bananes et d’ananas. Amélie a longtemps constitué l’essentiel des exportations du Mali, du Burkina Faso et de la Côte d’Ivoire. Cependant dès 1971, des expéditions expérimentales de mangues colorées furent réalisées avec succès. La consommation de mangues se démocratisant en Europe, le choix variétal s’est progressivement resserré : Amélie, en début de campagne, puis Kent, Keitt et Palmer. Parallèlement à cette évolution variétale, les techniques de conditionnement se sont progressivement modernisées.
Optical properties of cubic AlGaN

In this work we report optical characterization on several cubic c-AlGaN layers grown by MBE on SiC on Si pseudo-substrates, with different aluminum concentrations ranging from 0 to 70 %. Excitation power evolution of AlGaN photoluminescence (PL) spectra as well as reflectivity spectra allow to attribute PL peak to band gap recombination. PL energy dependence versus aluminum concentration is given. Reflectivity investigations are performed in the energy range between 1.5 eV and 4 eV on the samples. Theoretical calculations of multilayered structure reflectivity are fitted to experimental results, allowing an accurate determination of refractive index evolution versus Al concentration. From this analysis, qualitative information about interface roughness at AlGaN/SiC is also be derived.

Chemical modifications and processing of the 18S, 5.8S, and 25S ribosomal RNAs from the 35S pre-ribosomal RNA depend on an important set of small nucleolar ribonucleoprotein particles (snoRNPs). Genetic depletion of yeast Gar1p, an essential common component of H/ACA snoRNPs, leads to inhibition of uridine isomerizations to pseudouridines on the 35S pre-rRNA and of the early pre-rRNA cleavages at sites A1 and A2, resulting in a loss of mature 18S rRNA synthesis. To identify Gar1p functional partners, we screened for mutations that are synthetically lethal with a gar1 mutant allele encoding a Gar1p mutant protein lacking its two glycine/arginine-rich (GAR) domains. We identified a previously uncharacterized Saccharomyces cerevisiae open reading frame, YDR083W (now designated RRP8), that encodes a highly conserved protein containing motifs found in methyltransferases. Rrp8p localizes to the nucleolus. A yeast strain lacking this protein is viable at 30 °C but displays strong growth impairment at lower temperatures. In this strain, cleavage of the pre-rRNA at site A2 is strongly affected whereas cleavages at sites A0 and A1 are only slightly inhibited or delayed.

The digestive gland of Pecten maximus consists, as in other lamellibranchs, of numerous blindending tubules which communicate with the stomach by partially ciliated main ducts and non ciliated secondary ducts. The non-ciliated cells of the main ducts are characterized by a well developed brush border constituted by high and dense microvilli and a strong pinocytotic activity. Ciliated and non ciliated cells have a very similar fine structure. The digestive tubules have a large lumen and contain digestive cells at different stages of absorption, digestion and excretion, one part of the tubules being functional while the other is disintegrating. The dark crypts contain the flagellated secretory cells, characterized by a well developed granular endoplasmic reticulum, and the young immature cells which may replace both the secretory and digestive cells. The numerous lipid droplets occurring in the digestive duct cells and in the digestive cells reveal the lipid storage function of the digestive gland. Several enzyme activities involved in digestion have been localized in the digestive gland. High amylase activity and cellulase and lysozyme activities have been found in the ducts and in the tubules, whereas no proteolytic activity could be detected histochemically. Some intracellular peptidases and glycosidases have been localized in the cells of the digestive gland, especially in the brush-border cells of the ducts and in the functional part of the tubules. High alkaline and acid phosphatase activities are displayed by the duct brush-border cells and the digestive and secretory cells. These results show the main role of the digestive gland, both in extracellular digestion (secretion of the digestive enzymes) and in absorption and intracellular digestion and provide information on the respective functions of the different cells within these processes.
